What is the right mattress for me?
Every person is different. Different weights, shapes, ages, with different sensitivities and sleeping preferences. Some people are highly allergic to different materials as well as molds and dust mites. Some want all natural materials and minimal synthetics. Some people are hot sleepers, others are cold sleepers. Some have injuries affecting back, hips, neck, shoulders etc, and some have degenerative illnesses such as osteoporosis.
The beauty of shopping at rise+shine is that all our stores have a ‘Bed Test Area’ in which the mattresses are there for you to test out and try before you buy! We encourage you to take your time, trying out mattresses on your back or side, just like you normally sleep to make sure its right for you. How long should my mattress last?
Durability is determined by the quality of the components. The best quality components will ensure the comfort and support remains the same for many years (8-10 years is not uncommon).
Mattresses with lower grade components may last as little as 12 months or less before they loose their comfort. People with special needs (such as bad backs) need to know their mattresses are continuing to deliver top performance. In such cases, you may need to replace your mattress sooner than normal.
You can be sure the cheapest mattress will not give you any support or comfort for very long. Equally the most expensive may not give you the longest durability, however the better products clearly cost more and are usually the most comfortable.
How often should I turn my mattress?
Mattresses are similar to tires, they develop wear patterns based on the frequency of use and the weight of the user. Every mattress will bed in to the shape of the user over time. This is quite normal. We recommend you rotate mattresses in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If you can’t find any instructions, rotate at least every 3 months and turn over older style mattresses at least twice a year.
All rise+shine mattresses use the latest technology and highest quality components so never need to be turned over. These new generation mattresses only need to be rotated every quarter. Doing this as the seasons change makes it easier to remember.
What do growing kids really need?
Your children’s growing bodies need correct comfort and support to ensure they develop healthy and strong spines. Most children are very light and haven’t ‘filled out’ compared to adults so will benefit from a mattress with thicker comfort layers than what many adults would like. We DON’T recommend letting your children sleep on a budget mattress as they have minimal comfort. As the average height of a child has increased substantially over recent years, you may need to consider a king single sized bed.
How hard should my mattress be?
Never confuse firmness or softness with support. Depending on weight and shape, a soft mattress can be quite supportive. Good support is the ability of the mattress to hold weight, hold the spine in proper alignment and allow muscles to relax.

Support can be achieved with a number of different spring systems, natural latex and foams but not all systems are suitable for all needs.
Comfort is very subjective. Various levels of firmness or softness feel different to different people. Comfort is a personal preference based on age, weight and shape.
I like plush and he likes firm, what’s best for us?
Generally you need to consider the support for the larger person rather than extra comfort for the smaller person. Short of having separate mattresses, a compromise can be necessary even in custom-made beds. However today there are a variety of systems that can solve this problem.

Does it make a difference which position I sleep in?
The position you sleep in determines what part of your body will interact with the sleeping surface as well as the amount of stress the body undergoes during sleep.
The two basic sleep positions are back, and side. When sleeping on your side, it is vital that your pelvis is kept parallel to your shoulders, as any twist will place a lot of stress and pressure on your lower back. Most people will alternate positions during a typical nights sleep. How you sleep will affect your muscles, ligaments and bones. This significantly affects your quality of sleep and health. Sleeping on your stomach is very bad for your neck and back and should be avoided. If you find that the only way you can get comfortable is on your stomach, maybe your mattress doesn’t suit you.

Can I just buy a mattress and not a base?
Yes. Unlike mattresses, which deteriorate with age, a good-quality platform base or bed with solid timber, well-supported slats should last a lifetime.
Sprung bases however need to be replaced with a mattress or else the warranty will be void.
